Endowed Scholarship Program Our Named Scholarships
St. Rita School for the Deaf was founded in 1915 by Father Henry Waldhaus to educate Deaf and hard of
hearing students. The establishment of tuition for the education of our students has always been a
challenge. Special needs make it necessary to keep class sizes small. This small student-to-teacher
ratio increases costs substantially.
Because of our rich tradition of finding new methods of educating the deaf and hard of hearing, we have
devised a tuition assistance and scholarship program for our students based on need. This program is based
upon subsidized monies from, endowed scholarship funds, our annual fundraising efforts, and the ability
of our scholarships to keep pace with that need. The family income of 30% of the students attending St.
Rita School falls below the poverty level each year. This means very few can afford the full cost
tuition each year. Approximately, $2,500,000 is needed in scholarship money each year.
It is our hope that you will recognize the importance of this wonderful giving opportunity so that
together we ensure that Deaf and hard of hearing children receive a quality education in a safe,
value-oriented environment that addresses their special needs.
Each day the miracles of learning continue as we teach children how to learn and communicate without
hearing. We thank you for your commitment to our students as we partner in…teaching communication for
life.
