Literacy

Learning to read and write effectively, is a challenging task for many people, but even more so for deaf students. One of the primary causes of difficulty with the English language is that deaf people have not heard or have heard only in a limited way, spoken English.

In 2001, we began a new and exciting approach to literacy. This program not only consists of reading and writing, but also focuses on the strategies that students use to read and write. It is the how they do reading and writing that is helping to enhance literacy.

At the beginning of the school year all students are evaluated in reading and writing. Evaluations include: reading behaviors and difficulties, text difficulty, letter identification, concepts about print, word tests, writing samples, vocabulary tests, and evaluations of reading levels. From these evaluations we are able to determine the level of book for each student. If a book is too difficult or not challenging enough for a student, then interest is quickly lost.
